The Problem, As I See It
Republicans are running from Bush right now. For the next 8 months you'll see a lot of them pointing fingers. What you won't hear from them though is any discussion of the fact that they were the party in power giving Bush free reign. You'll hear none admit that they're to blame for this mess. Nobody is responsible.
Democrats are trying to look tough so they can win a national election. Hillary may as well be wearing jackboots. If they have a message other than "we're not Republicans" I've yet to hear it.
The problem: Nobody is being honest. The Republicans will get back in line after they hold both houses of Congress. They'll trade obedience to Bush on Iraq for additional tax and spending cuts. The Democrats, having offered nothing different in yet another election, looking like Republicans-Lite, will remain where they are: out of power.
Who loses? Our soldiers. The average Joe. Women. The environment. Public health. The poor. Anyone not of a mind to carry a bible. Our standing in the world. Working men and women. Democracy. The truth.
I know it sounds like I'm being melodramatic but I honestly believe if we can't find a way to divide this government and get at least one check on Bush in place in November, we may not recognize our country by 2008.
