One and Done
The Bears were eliminated from the playoffs yesterday. Sure, it's better than "none and done" like the Packers and 19 other teams in the league but, it's still disappointing.
The Bears seemed to have trouble with just about every part of the game yesterday for the first 20 minutes. Their reliable punter gave away field position like it was candy. Their "home field advantage" turned into two slips by cornerbacks resulting in 14 points for Carolina. A normally reliable corner, Peanut Tillman, was MIA for most of the game.
The bright side is, the real Bears showed up and made it a game up until the last 40 seconds. They lost by one touchdown. They were in it despite matching up with a Carolina team that was clearly better on that given Sunday. They had no answer for Steve Smith, their #1 wide receiver and they made too many mistakes early to overcome them. It was a brutal game of hitting and both teams can be proud that they left everything on the field.
Looking ahead, the Bears seem poised to take it to the next level. Rex Grossman really took a big step yesterday in becoming a real NFL QB. He'll need to stay healthy but if he does, things could be really exciting next year. Almost everyone on the team is signed through next season so losing free agents shouldn't be an issue. With a few minor improvements (via the draft or free agency) I see no reason this Bears team shouldn't own their division next season and make a deeper run in the playoffs come January 2007.
Here's hoping for better luck for my boys next time around. Go Bears!!!
