Tax Cuts for the Wealthy
According to Bush, he'll not consider increasing taxes to help pay for hurricane reconstruction. Not war, not calamity, not deficits larger than any in history...
Nothing will get George to reconsider the tax breaks that have lined the pockets of his biggest contributors. Resolute, to be sure. But I suppose when he said he was going to spend whatever it takes to rebuild New Orleans bigger and better than it was before, I suppose he should have told us he was just adding it to the tab he's leaving the middle class after he's long gone. See, when push comes to shove, there are really only two ways to make up the deficits:
1. grow the economy such that the tax revenues coming in grow and ultimately cover the past expenses or
2. raise taxes on the largest number of tax payers in the pool.
Number one above has been talked about by Republicans since Reagan and hasn't proven out yet. In fact, the Republicans have had total control over our government for 5 years now and the deficits have been outrageous. It appears that as tax revenues grow, so do the costs of everything they need to pay for. Funny how that works.
No, friends, the only way these deficits will ever be paid down is by massively slashing programs the Republicans hate (the very programs that attempt to address the issues W mentioned he wanted to solve while fixing New Orleans) or by raising taxes on those capable of making the biggest difference. So, at the end of the day, the joke is on us. The middle class has allowed an eight year tax holiday for the wealthy and we'll be the ones paying for it later. By then, W will be sitting on Trent Lott's porch, sipping lemon aid and complaining about how difficult it is to find good help these days.
