On Abortion
As previously stated in my post Email Grab Bag, I believe abortion is immoral in many cases. As support for this thought I offer the following link. I'm not a practicing Catholic but I do believe this writing by John Paul II offers an incredible insight on Life. Once again, I defend my position of being "Pro Choice" based on one passage in this writing:
From Paragraph 60
Even if the presence of a spiritual soul cannot be ascertained by empirical data, the results themselves of scientific research on the human embryo provide "a valuable indication for discerning by the use of reason a personal presence at the moment of the first appearance of a human life: how could a human individual not be a human person?"
To me, what this quote means is simply that the Pope admits there is no certainty as to when the soul enters the new being. In my estimation, the righteous could disagree with this particular point and since this use of scientific research places the whole into the realm of man and our judgment, while I firmly believe what I believe, I don't feel I can enforce my beliefs on others. I am not your judge.
I hope this explains the apparent inconsistency in my beliefs as noted in recent emails.
